Back to California Naturals

Skippy liked the home cooking and I think it was good for a time, but he was having to go out way too much.  So I was afraid he was getting to much or to little of something. After reasoning it out and budgeting things out we put him back on the California Naturals Herring and Sweet Potato. This is what works for him the best.

Home Cooking

I have started to cook for Skippy again. Click here for a list of things not to give your dog and suggestions for what is good for them. Skippy can not have potatoes or rice and also I have heard broccoli is not very agreeable for some dogs, also when using chicken broth read the ingredient list and make sure it has no onion powder but otherwise I find this link pretty helpful.  I feel like the blog name Kibble in the life of a Fox Terrier is still relevant to our journey of finding out about doggie nutrition.

Oatmeal egg scramble with sweet potato, green beans and sardines with a garnish of parsley. Of course Skippy took out the parsley and set it to the side as you can see in the photo above.  The other day he took out the spine of the sardine and set it on the side, yesterday he took out the large sardine and set it down and pounced on it, lol.  Skippy is  a funny dog.  As long as I chop up the parsley in his food he will eat it this was just a garnish.

In My Youth

In my youth, chewing, running away, selective hearing
filled my days.
Now here I lay dreaming
of youth gone by
the fun I've had learning
becoming, being, now content.
Knowing the best place is beside the warm fire
at my masters feet
knowing I have food in my bowl
and kindness from my masters hand.
I have learned not to stray and that
it is not wise to wander too far.
I've learned wisdom to listen, to chew on my toys and
leave masters shoes.
My life is good.

Hustle and Bustle of Life

In the hustle and bustle of life, Skippy has gotten a little neglected in the blog world (spoiled however in real life by Jayme, Rowden, and Jay)(I'm the disciplinarian ;-)  I will have to get some pics of going to the dog park, it has been really rainy lately so Skippy is missing his friends.

This is a picture of my husband Jay with Skippy in his lap.

Skippy dropping his squeaker its time to play!

Growing Older

My blog seems so technical and really I am more of a lyrical person so I decided to post a poem I wrote about Skippy.

You use to sleep
With one eye open
Whimpering in
Your slumber
Dreaming of Play.

Now you sleep Soundly
Both eyes closed
Whimpering in
Your Slumber
Tired from Play.

Back to the Basics

The Pinnacle ended up not working for us, and now we are back on California Naturals and we are going to stick with this for a while. I may use Karma in the future, since it is made by the same company. That way Skippy would be rotating two proteins. For now I am keeping him on the same thing for a while, if it ain't broke don't fix it. As far as feeding a dog a food with fish in it I would be very careful, the preservative ethoxyquin, to keep fish meal fresh, does not have to be put on dog food labels, so unless the manufacturer states that they do not allow this in their foods do not use it.

Happy Birthday Week Skippy!

Skippy turned 10 this week, he is now 70 in dog years. We gave him carrots and pears instead of cake. We hope to have him with us for several more years!!! His last vet visit he was in good health, just had a nasty skin infection that has cleared up with changing his diet and that is how this blog started. ;-)

No More Rice :-P

The Merrick worked well and I think it is a good food, but for Skippy no more rice. So we are on Pinnacle now and liking it we will keep this one in our rotation. California Naturals is so far my favorite and will be the next food we rotate him back to and use the most. It has the simplest ingredients. So as far as food goes that is the latest in our family dog news, oh and Grandma Lucy's has potatoes so that will not work either.
